It is a small sac at the pharyngoesophageal junction resulting from hypopharyngeal herniation through a zone of low resistance. They are more frequent in the elderly and produce symptoms such as: difficulty swallowing, bad breath, cough (especially at night).

The diagnosis can be made by imaging with a barium esophagogram and by endoscopy, being its treatment by this last method. The main complications of the diverticulum are respiratory, such as pneumonitis, asthmatic bronchitis or lung abscesses that can compromise the patient's life. Carcinoma is a rare but possible complication.
